Common Problems

I clicked on the download link, but then I got a blank screen. What happened?
This happens when your web browser is not configured correctly for opening PDF files. You have two options: 1) either save this file to your hard drive or 2) reinstall Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you are on a PC, you can save the file by right clicking your mouse on the download link and selecting "Save Target As" or "Save Link As". On a Mac, click and hold on the link then select "Download to Disk".

How do I import a PDF into Quark?
To import a PDF into Quark, you will need to have the Quark PDF Filter Extension. The most recent version is PDF Filter 1.6 and is a free download. Click here to download PDF Filter 1.6 (Mac, PC).

With the PDF Filter installed, you can place the PDF into a picture box. Draw your picture box and then click on "File -> Get Picture" to select the picture for this picture box. If the PDF Filter is installed correctly, you should be able to select the PDF file to be placed.

If the PDF file you are using is a multi-page file, in the "Get Picture" window, click once on the name of the PDF file. This will bring up information about the file. In the lower left corner of the "Get Picture" window will be an input field labeled "PDF Page". In this field enter the page number you want to import. Quark only allows you to import one page at a time. For a multi-page PDF file, you will need to make multiple picture boxes and import one page into each picture box.

I downloaded my TV grids, but only the first day appears. Where are the rest of the grids?
The TV grids come as a multi-page PDF. Each page will have one TV grid in it.

How often are my TV grids updated?
Your TV grids are updated once a week. If you have indicated that your download day is Monday, your grids will be updated by 10 AM Central time Monday morning. These grids will stay posted all week until they are overwritten the next Monday with your new grids.

What are the dimensions of the TV grids?
Your TV grids are built to a 3 column (5.75 inches) width on a 50 inch web. The number of channels you choose to have included in your grid determines the height.

I downloaded a Crossword Puzzle, but I cannot find the answer grid. Where is the answer grid?
The Crossword Puzzles come as a multi-page PDF. The first page has the puzzle and the second page contains the answer grid.

What are the dimensions of the Weather forecasts?
The weather forecasts are built for a 50 inch web. Forecasts come in three sizes 1 col (1.833 in), 2 col (3.792 in) and 3 col (5.75 in).

How often is the weather forecast updated?
The weather forecast data is updated 4 times throughout the day.

When I download my weather, the icons and maps are solid black. What causes this?
This problem happens when you open a weather PDF in Mac OS X using the builtin "Preview" program. You can tell if you are using this program by double click on the pdf. Look at the top left of the screen next to the Apple icon, and if the word "Preview" appears, you are using the preview program. The weather PDF you downloaded is a correct PDF, this is just a bug with the "Preview" program. You can open up the weather PDF in Acrobat to verify that the file does display correctly. Using the PDF in Quark or Indesign should not be a problem.

When I import text into Quark, a lot of the punctuation marks disappear. How do I fix this?
This happens because Quark does not support Unicode Text. Many of the text files you download from Hometown Content use Unicode characters (quotation marks, ellipse, emdash, etc.). To fix this problem, save the text file to your computer. Open up the text file in the Mac TextEdit program and resave the text file as a Western (Mac OS Roman) encoded text file. When you save the file, there is an option for Plain Text Encoding. In this drop down menu, select the Western (Mac OS Roman) option. Now that you have converted the text file, you will be able to import it into Quark without losing the punctuation marks.
